July "Six Sided Cube" Recording Experiment

3rd Movement (21 megs)

Here's a clip from Six Sided Cube's July recording-experiment at the Seattle Drum School.  Sheridan (drums), 5-Track (guitar), and I (bass) met up in Georgetown at around 8:30.  After marveling briefly at the deep polished grooves of a large band rehearsing there, we hauled our gear into a small room in the corner of the building and quickly set up rigs and digital multi-tracking gear. Even by our standards, the playing was unusually free and reckless throughout the evening, but I thought this final movement (after I noticed and turned my volume up to parity) was particularly energetic and connected.

After that, we looped an extreme-odd-time change (that Five brought in) to the point of giddy Americana-inflected hypnosis.  But I'll hold back the evidence of that for now...

June Neon Grey

Continuity Jam (13 megs)

Here's a continuity-jam from yesterday's Neon Grey (working name...?) session with 5-Track (guitar), Woody Frank (guitar), Adrian Woods (drums), and Me Woods (bass).  This was shortly after Woody had arrived and we had all quickly digested an arrangement for "Your Song".  A little post-warmup freejam seemed appropriate.  The music that followed actually surprised me, seeming to expose a new dimension of what this lineup could be about.

May Neon Grey

Under The Tent Jam (4 megs)

May 11th was our 3rd “Neon Grey” session, with 5-Track (guitar), Woody Frank (guitar), Adrian Woods (drums), and Me Woods (bass).  This particular Wednesday was a fairly focused rehearsal, with lots of progress on the short list of tunes, so we didn’t capture any epic free-jams for the blog here.  But to commemorate the occasion, here’s a clip of us exploring a possible light-structure for the improvised section following “Under The Tent”.

Neon Grey

Neon Hey (3 megs)
Continuity Exercise (11 megs)

Here are a couple of short clips from the end of our March rehearsal of the Neon Brown All-Star project (5-Track on Guitar, Woody Frank on Guitar, Adrian Woods on Drums, and Me Woods on Bass).  With Evan Strauss hanging out as well, it was an all-around good time, with a good bit of tune-shedding and even some focused experimental jamming (including the "hey hole" and gradually-evolving-loop exercises above).

Neon Brown All Stars Session 1

opening space (6 megs)

Here's a pretty cool improvised warmup space from last week's rehearsal for a NeonBrown-related project with 5-Track (guitar), Woody Frank (guitar), Adrian Woods (drums), and Me Woods (bass).  This kicked off what continued to be an exciting night of music, perhaps especially for Adrian and me -- who were experiencing a fresh take on some material that we hadn't played together in over 10 years!

January Experimental Recording Session

Prelude to a Power Ballad (4 megs)
Blue Rose (15 megs)

Here are a couple of clips from an experimental recording session last week with 5-Track (guitar), Woody Frank (guitar), Patrick Lenon (drums), Sheridan Riley (drums), and Me Woods (bass).

In the first clip, we had just finished setting up the multitracking gear and immediately dove into a level-check jam.  This is a slightly truncated mix of that.

The second piece is a hypnotic psych-jam, called out by Five at the very end of the session.  Felt like this one could go on forever.  Might be that we'll use a short piece of this in the final tune!

A nice blend of sounds, I thought!  I'm also very much looking forward to sharing some of the material from the main session, but more on that later.
